June 2009 CD Review
Roxy PerryRoxy Perry “In My Sweet Time”. Blue Perry Hill 2008 Perry is a really kind woman, gifted with a juicy sweet voice. Besides a not bad harmonica player, she is also a bright song writer, arranger and producer. The results can be appreciated on her new cd, recorded for her own record label Blue Perry Hill. Roxy has done an interesting well finished album, excellent in some aspects, as in such effective beautiful songs like “Bed Of Blues”, “Roadmaster” or “Blues Come To Call”, which are a good example of what you will find along the whole cd. Twelve suggestive swingin’ tracks, where you will find blues, jazz, country, rhythm & blues and rock. Musicians like Matt Baxter, Hiro Suzuki, Mike Ventimiglia, Bob Fusco or Linda Geiger perfectly control what they are doing and give the best of themselves, keeping a high climax along the cd. Well done Mrs. Roxy Perry, Queen of New York Blues!  GREAT
Todd WolfeTodd Wolfe “Borrowed Time”. Blues Leaf 2008. Electrifying powerful cd with impressive guitar discharges, that will get right into your body as ii were vitamins. No more B vitamins doses, no more dark coffee cups, the hard cutting Todd Wolfe’s rock blues will wake you up every day, everywhere, any time you listen to his music. “Borrowed Time” includes ten songs, most Todd’s own compositions together with some other ones signed by Felix Pappalardi (do you remember The Cream, Peter Green’s “Oh Well” or Howlin Wolf’s “Who’s Been Talkin’”?). An intense wild album you will not easily get out of it. You will also find singer and guitar player Leslie West and other well known musicians on the cd. In very short words, first class high quality Texas rock blues. GREAT
Earl GreenEarl Green “One Way”. Snakestone 2008. What makes different a singer like Earl Green to the rest of his colleagues? Possibly his singing conviction, the songs he plays but, over all, the way he sings. Green has got one of the best British rhythm and blues voices he undoubtedly is one of the most considered United Kingdom artists. His new album is particularly based on blues, but it cannot be defined as a blues album, because it is a sophisticated, ambitious, rich cd, with a variety of styles, with quite different sources and other musical genres influences, such as jazz and funk melodies or even rock fusion rhythm patterns, together with a variety of musical nuances. Green is backed by a bunch of high quality musicians who show their musical skills and great quality, such as brothers Jake and Artie Zaits on guitars, Richard Simmons on keyboard, Jeff Walker on bass and Evan Jenkins on drums. GREAT.
Root DoctorRoot Doctor “Live At The Cadillac Club”. Big O Records 2008. Root Doctor were nominated to 2007 Blues Music Awards for their album “Change Out Way”. Since then on, their popularity has gone up and up, until reaching a quite high level. Besides, they have been doing a non stop work in all Mid West clubs, bars and city halls. To enjoy live shows of soul, blues and groovin' band becomes a joyful experience, as they always give on scene a terrific energy, passion and feeling in every song they play. The cd was recorded live at the Cadillac Club and includes ten unforgettable impressive tracks of his habitual set list. Root Doctor are Freddie Cunningham on main vocals, James Williams on bass and vocal background, Jim Alfredson on keyboards and vocals, Grez Nagy on guitar and vocals and Rick Bole on drums. You will also find The Motor City Horns in some cd cuts, to complete an effective warm passionate final result. GREAT.
Sleepy John EstesSleepy John Estes With Hammie Nixon “On 80 Highway”. Delmark 2008. From time to time legendary Delmark Records gives us a small treasure as this one. The cd includes two blues icons, Sleepy John Estes, the blues poet of Tennessee, on guitar and vocals, and Hammie Nixon, a musician deeply influenced by John Lee Sonny Boy Williamson, on vocals, harmonica and kazoo, recording together just before they started their tour to Japan in summer 1974 which were some of the first blues shows that took place in that country, only preceded by B.B. King who was there before. As usual Estes’ voice brings us a deep emotional expression that, together with his restrained high tone, give him a sweet delicious vocal touch. Both musicians perfectly team, not only with their instrumental playing, but also on vocals, they sometimes sing altogether or with two voices. Delightful Delta blues coming from two great musicians who wrote some historical pages of blues music and unfortunately let us orphan of their music many years ago, as Sleepy John Estes died June the 5th. 1977 and Hammie Nixon passed away on August, the 17th 1984. GREAT.
Various Delmark ArtistsVarious Artists “55 Years Of Blues”. Delmark 2008 (CD + DVD). An excellent present for fans, lovers and blues devotees are this cd and dvd that have recently been published by Chicago record company Delmark Records to celebrate their 55 Anniversary leading one of the most impressive blues and jazz catalogues. The whole company, owned and by Bob Koester, have done a priceless work for both musical genres, so we are all in debt with them as, without Delmark, Bob Koester and his record store Jazz Record Mart, Chicago blues would not have been what ii is now and this is something any aficionado cannot forget. Seventeen splendid songs have been included on this cd, representing some of the most famous ‘Windy City’ blues artists, like Junior Wells, Detroit Jr., J.B. Hutto, Syl Johnson, Willie Kent, Bonnie Lee, Roosevelt Sykes, Steve Freund, Otis Rush, Jimmy Dawkins, Magic Sam… until complete a seventeen musicians list. Besides the dvd lets us enjoy, see and listen to Tail Dragger, Jimmy Burns, Lurrie Bell, Carey Bell, Byther Smith, Dave Specter, Little Arthur Duncan, Mississippi Heat and Zora Young. As you can see, both cd and dvd selections, are really amazing. An enjoyable present, impossible to refuse, you will immediately love. ESSENTIAL.
