We have always been amazed with the story of Grandma Gatewood. Hiking the Appalachian Trail straight through at age 65. These were the early days of the Appalachian Trail and many sections were not complete. Grandma turned around and did this again two years later at age 67 and then again, in sections, a third time. She also hiked the 2000+ mile Oregon Trail.
After all these miles Grandma said that the 11 mile hike from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls and then Ash Cave and back were more beautiful than all the other miles she hiked put together.
Grandma was raised near here around Gallipolis, Ohio. We made a pilgrimage to her burial site and were able to find her headstone.
